A DCinema Equipment White List would be a list agreed upon by the studios who collectively say, “This equipment passes the requirements that we find important, in terms of security and of quality. We will release the films that we are responsible for to facilities who have this equipment installed.” It is not exactly the same as being DCI Compliant.

We won't find a White List of Studio Approved Digital Cinema Equipment. The reason is wrapped in history and corporate politics. Too much to go into here. Individual facilities will (Warners, Deluxe and Technicolor seem to have done the yeoman work in this regard) and others will magically distribute without a wink if the equipment works in those labs.

We aren't foolish enough to make any claims about the data presented on this form. It is only data that we have heard about and is true to the best of our knowledge. It is up to you to confirm anything that you read here.

We look forward to being told of more White Listed Equipment...if there were such a thing.

Further to the discussion of the Specifications, there is now a Compliance Document from the DCI that can be obtained by clicking on the link.

Announcements are expected soon as to who will be able to actually Certify a piece of equipment. Perchance an industry group?

DCinema Servers –

Avica/DTS has been through several processes, and its clients are now able to play JPEG2000 movies on these players.

Dolby clients have been playing JPEG and 3D movies for a year now. Dolby players were the first to be FIPS Level 3 Certified.

Doremi has the largest installed base of players, having been able to play JPEG movies for nearly 2 years now. As of late October 2007, Doremi servers are FIPS Level 3 compliant.

DCinema Projectors –

There are several projectors which have been built specifically for digital cinema, which can be broken into two categories:

  • TI Projectors (with approved OEM agreements, meaning Christie, NEC, and Barco and their licensees Cinemeccanica and Kinotone)
  • Sony Projectors

JVC and other companies have built systems that could be compliant...the story continues on their efforts.
